Animal Control

The Town employs a single Animal Control Officer (ACO) who is responsible for local enforcement of NYS Ag & Markets laws (Article 7) and local dog control codes. We respond to calls of dogs running at large, dangerous dogs, animal bites and distressed wildlife. As a courtesy we also refer nuisance wildlife complaints.

The State requires that all dogs over four months of age be licensed, and that the licenses are renewed yearly. Licenses can be purchased at the Town Clerk's office. Please have proof of rabies vaccination available. Warren County Public Health offers Rabies Immunization Clinics throughout the year.

A dog is not permitted to run at large unless it is restrained by an adequate leash, or accompanied by and under the full control of it's owner or other responsible person. When a dog is seized for violations of the Town Code or the Ag. & Markets law, the dog is impounded and temporarily housed at the Glens Falls Animal Hospital. Owners are required to pay a fine & boarding fee, and show proof of a valid license and rabies shot prior to release of the dog.

In the instance of a healthy, adoptable dog that is not claimed by an owner, the Town has signed a contract to give the dog to the SPCA of Upstate New York for adoption purposes.

We are prohibited from capturing domestic cats, and we refer all calls regarding this type of complaint to Warren County SPCA 793-4048.

Our regular hours of service are Monday through Friday 8 AM to 4:30 PM. Emergency calls such as a suspected rabies concern or an animal bite outside of regular hours should be directed to the Warren County Sheriff's office 743-2500. Please note this number is for emergency calls only.

Residents are encouraged to contact the ACO with any questions, concerns or complaints.
