Population and Buildout Study
TOWN OF QUEENSBURY COMPLETES POPULATION PROJECTION & BUILDOUT STUDY
QUEENSBURY — The Town of Queensbury announces that a study of the potential maximum growth for the Town has been completed.
The Town of Queensbury Population Projection & Buildout Study is a joint effort produced by the Town and Queensbury Union Free School District staff and officials. The resulting product is a picture of what the Town of Queensbury can expect if all of the land were fully “built out” over the long term, when applying today’s zoning standards.
“There are many reasons for putting together a study of this type,” stated Marilyn Ryba, Executive Director of Community Development for the Town of Queensbury. “The Buildout Study is an outgrowth of a recommendation from the 1998 Town of Queensbury Comprehensive Land Use Plan, which noted ‘a buildout analysis is a way to determine appropriate zoning densities and any increases in the allowed density of development.’ The Queensbury Union Free School District, the largest school district in the Town, has had fluctuations in school enrollments. They expressed the need to have a better understanding of impacts resulting from housing and population growth. We anticipate the study will be used for many types of future community development and planning efforts. It is a tool that may be used to initiate zoning or subdivision changes, placement of public infrastructure such as water and sewer, and demand for other community and public services and facilities, such as recreation, roads, and schools.”
“By the year 2030, we can expect a total population of almost 36,850 people,” said Dan Stec, Supervisor for the Town of Queensbury. “Over the next five years, we will most likely see an increase of 275 new students, an average increase of 55 students per year.”
Mr. Stec acknowledged that the study has taken some time in production. “The final numbers are not much different than the draft document presented in August, although they are lower. The Queensbury Union Free School District had some concerns pertaining to the Town’s construction numbers used in the study. We carefully reviewed our building reports and individual files over the past 15 years to make sure their concerns would be satisfied. All in all, we believe we have a solid product from which to move forward to plan and provide for our community.”
