Town 2009 Sales Tax Rebate

Dear Queensbury Residents and Taxpayers,

I am very pleased to announce that 2009 will mark the sixth year the Town of Queensbury has left a portion of its share of sales tax revenues with Warren County to serve as a credit for the Town Taxpayers' portion of the County tax levy.

Past years rebates were:
2004 $375,000
2005 $1,000,000
2006 $2,500,000
2007 $2,000,000
2008 $2,000,000
2009 $2,000,000
Total to date: $9,875,000

Residents will see the effect of this rebate in the form of a lower county tax rate in their January 2009 property tax bill. $2,000,000 equates to approximately $0.69 per $1K assessed value reduction of the Queensbury county tax rate.
Of course, the rebate subject was an initiative of mine that I've championed over the past seven years. The rationale behind the Town's rebate program is the belief that individuals and not government are the best stewards of excess taxpayer monies. Additionally, it represents the action taken to reduce the size of the Town's fund balance to a reasonable level by returning it to the taxpayer as opposed to spending it. It helps remove the temptation to spend the surplus and forces Town government to run a tighter financial ship.
Given the fiscal challenges that New York State is facing and the certain impact this will have on the county's 2009 financial picture, it was of particular importance to repeat the $2 million rebate in 2009. The continuation and amount of any future years' rebates will depend on the financial needs of the Town and the size of the fund balance.
It’s a pleasure and a privilege to serve you. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance.
Enjoy the rest of summer.

Sincerely,
Daniel G. Stec, Town Supervisor
